Wheels of Mercury This Malokarpatan side-project delivers one of the finest EPs of 2023. Highly atmospheric black metal that reminds me of Kvist at points.

Kursma Maybe a bit more cinematic in nature than the previous album was, yet very much stellar. Similar to the classic black metal mini-albums of the 90s. A classic to be. Favorite track: Metafyzika barbarstva.

theearthaflame The debut is one of my favourite albums in recent years. Still channeling the spirit of early romantic, folky Norwegian black metal, but this time round it’s darker, heavier, and overall better, if that’s even possible. Stop wasting time and buy now, you won’t find many releases that enjoyable this year. If this was a full-length, it would be year-end top5 material. I picked the interlude as my favourite track. 🥲 Favorite track: Jazda preludov decembrovým nebom.

Alcoholocausto I hope that this EP portends a full-length album to follow (and soon). I found this EP better than their full album release, so if this represents their current direction then I eagerly await additional songs! Not to imply that the style is radically different, but rather that they seem to have improved in some way that I can't quite articulate. Favorite track: Modré kryštalické sály.

vonz-collection Very engaging album. Good balance of the synths and black metal stuff, additional atmosphere comes from the native-language lyrics. Definitely one I will get back to. Favorite track: Modré kryštalické sály.

The first time I heard this band was off their Heir of Ecliptical Romanticism, and I remember the riffs being the highlight of the album. This album is no different. The band just has a fuller sound with better production these days. Many of their tunes here remind me of early Satyricon. The classic heavy metal influences really make those riffs stick in your brain. Bart
